20.11.08 : Champions League: Kiel in the final despite defeat

The German Champion controlled the first part of the first half, being in lead with 6:2, 7:3 and 11:9, but because of some missed fastbreaks and shots from the wing positions, they were equalised by a high motivated home squad. Anyway, Kiel was the team who was in advantage after 30 minutes, 20:19, thanks especially to some decisive saves from Omeyer and a great Nikola, 6 goals. But the four counter attacks missed in the first 30 minutes were not a good sign, even if Barcelona´s goalie, Venio Losert, was not bad at all.
After the break, the Zebras were in lead with maximum two goals, for the last time with 29:27 after 43 minutes. Great in this period of the match Filip Jicha, who scored 7 from his 8 goals in the second half, followed by Niko, who made golas every time it was dangerous for his side. But suddenly the guests had problems with the opponent open defense, couldn´t find the proper solutions to score, made mistakes and the Spaniards scored four consecutive goals and took the lead, 31:29 after 46 minutes. From 36:34 (51.) in their favour, Romero, Lozano and the others extend their lead to 6 goals, 42:36 with 3 minutes to go, but a goal from Klein and another save from Omeyer against Romero destroyed their hopes.
"We knew that it will be a difficult second leg. A lot of people thought that it will be easy for us but it was not the case. We played very good and we were concentrated for 40 minutes, we were always in lead. In the end we were afraid a bit and this was not OK", said Nikola after the dispute.
